Today I changed the links on the main page into RSS feeds. Previously, I had to update (and upload) the main page to reflect new posts on the three Blogger hosted pages. This change should make keeping this site current immeasurably easier.
The page hosting the archive received some attention; I changed the way the texts were organized by redoing the format. Hopefully this will make it easier to tell when and where a text came from and, ultimately, make it more useful for those who use this site as a reference.
Yung Wing was born on November 17, 1828 in Nanping, Jiangjunshan, China, making today Yung Wing's 180th birthday. Four years ago, Hartford's mayor Eddie A. Perez honored Yung Wing by making November 17, 2004 Yung Wing Day. I am unsure whether Perez intended every November 17 to be Yung Wing Day or just that date in 2004. His letter (from then) reads, "In recognition of Yung Wing's contributions to the City of Hartford and China, as Mayor of the City of Hartford, on behalf of its citizens and government, I am honoured to proclaim November 17, 2004 as 'Yung Wing Day' in the City of Hartford." I searched The Hartford Courant for any birthday coverage of Yung Wing today... nothing. Yale Daily News... also nothing. The only press coverage I found remembering Yung Wing is out of China. Not surprising.
The Yung Wing Project was updated for the occassion.Rhe page hosting the texts received a makeover: now the documents are organized by date instead of importance and the date and source are now included in the summary of the text. The bibliography was also updated, as was the visual materials page.
Two more texts from The New York Times have been added to the archive. One deals with Yale's 1876 graduation ceremony, the other Yale's 1902 Commencement Day:
Among the Colleges On Yale's Commencement Day in 1876, Yung Wing received his honorary LL.D.
